Details on pensions, insurance, and taxes for freelance hairdressers
If I become a freelancer, how much tax will be deducted from my salary?
Income tax is calculated by subtracting expenses from compensation.
If a hairdresser rents out a space and works at a contract hair salon, income tax will be added to their remuneration. By reporting expenses when filing your tax return, your remuneration ➖ expenses = income, and you will know your income for that year. Income tax will be calculated based on this amount.
What insurance should I get if I become a salon-rented hairdresser?
It is best to apply for national pension and national health insurance at the sumo office.
If you go to your local government office, you can apply for national pension and national health insurance, so I think it's a good idea to enroll in the minimum insurance there.
As a salon hairdresser, you are a self-employed individual and therefore cannot enroll in the Employees' Pension Insurance, but if you are worried about your future, there is another insurance called the National Pension Fund, which provides a generous pension. I recommend enrolling in this insurance. Incidentally, enrolling in the National Pension Fund is also a good idea as it will allow you to save on taxes.
When do I file my tax return?
The period from January 1st to December 31st will be carried out between February 16th and March 15th of the following year.
Income tax is calculated based on income earned during the year from January 1st to December 31st. Income tax returns must be filed between February 16th and March 15th of the following year. There are two types of tax returns: blue and white. For hairdressers who rent out face-to-face spaces, blue returns are recommended if you want to save on taxes. You can earn a deduction of up to 650,000 yen.
How much can I declare as an expense?
You can declare anything you think is necessary for your job.
For hairdressers who rent out salons, these expenses would generally include material costs, commuting expenses, beauty equipment costs, telephone charges, communication costs, magazines and books used for counseling, and participation fees for training days. If you file your tax return using the blue tax return method, which reduces the amount of tax you pay, you will need to attach receipts for your expenses, so be sure to keep a record of receipts throughout the year.
